What is yoga?

From B.K.S. Iyengar's Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali:
Yoga is the cessation of movements in the consciousness.

1.2 - yogah cittavritti nirodhah

yogah: union or integration from the outermost layer to the innermost self, that is, from the skin to the muscles, bones, nerves, mind, intellect, will, consciousness and self

citta: consciousness, which is made up of three factors: mind (manas), intellect (buddhi) and ego (ahamkara). Citta is the vehicle of observation, attention, aims and reason; it has three functions, cognition, conation or volition, and motion

vritti: state of mind, fluctuations in mind, course of conduct, behavior, a state of being, mode of action, movement, function, operation

nirodhah: obstruction, stoppage, opposition, annihilation, restraint, control, cessation

What are the benefits of yoga?

A steady and consistent yoga practice will positively affect the five layers of your being (koshas):

Physical: Achieve greater strength, stamina, flexibility and balance.  Improve posture, relieve back ache and prevent injury.

Physiological: Experience vitality and an overall feeling of wellness and lightness. An increase of blood circulation to your organs helps strengthen the immune system, improve digestion, and regulate the metabolism.  Yoga can help lower blood pressure and improve sleep and fertility.

Mental/Emotional: Yoga helps to calm the mind and reduce stress and anxiety leading to more contentment, joy, happiness, clarity, focus and a renewed sense of possibility to live a life you love

Intellectual: Discover a greater sense of awareness, creativity and reflection.

Spiritual: Connect to your deepest Self and purpose.

What can I expect in a yoga class?

You will be introduced to the basic asanas (poses or postures) which will include standing poses, seated poses and restorative poses. The teacher will show you how to use yoga props such as belts and blocks to help you achieve the postures to the best of your ability.

All the asanas have different effects on the body. The basic postures that beginners are taught will build up strength and stamina, and improve muscular tone, flexibility and alignment. Practicing the postures reduces tiredness and soothes the nerves. It also trains and disciplines the mind so concentration is improved. Yoga is therefore a great help if you suffer from stress!

What are good classes to start with?

Our Gentle Flow and Beginner classes are a great place to start your yoga practice. Explore our classes!

How do I sign up for classes?

Please arrive a few minutes early for your first class at Orange County Yoga Studio. You can register in person or sign up for a class online. Reserve Your Space!

What should I wear to a yoga class?

Wear comfortable clothes that do not restrict your movement in any way. The instructor should be able to see your hips, knees and ankles clearly (shorts or footless tights are ideal). Do not wear jewelry or heavy perfume, oils, creams and strong scents. Yoga is always practiced in bare feet so leave your shoes at the door.

Do I need to bring a yoga mat?

Our studio is fully equipped with mats, blocks, straps and blankets. However, some students prefer to bring their own mat. You can purchase quality yoga mats at our studio, online or at many local stores like Target.

Is your room heated?

No, our studio is not heated. Our space is well ventilated and clean for practice. We believe that heat is built from within. Our teachers are extensively trained in sequencing that will properly warm you up for more difficult postures.

Can I eat before class?

Yoga should be practiced on an empty stomach, so leave 3-4 hours after a main meal and at least an hour after a light snack.

Can I practice yoga during menstruation?

Yes. However, if you are menstruating, there are certain poses that are not suitable to practice. Please consult the teacher before the class begins. The teacher may give you some alternative postures to perform during the class.

Can I practice yoga if I have an injury?

In many cases, yoga can support the body as it undergoes healing. Our teachers are knowledgeable and are trained to support you with common injuries including knee, neck and lower back pain. Please consult your doctor or healthcare provider before starting a yoga practice.

How flexible or fit do I need to be to practice yoga?

Yoga is for every body, no matter your flexibility or fitness level.  You’ll work at your own capacity by which our skilled teachers will modify your practice and accommodate any individual concerns. Our studio is also fully equipped with props so that you can work on every pose based on your ability. Over time, a consistent and steady practice will enhance your physical strength and flexibility.

How often should I come to class?

We know that life can get busy but we encourage you to practice regularly, whether once a week or more.  Students who come regularly usually notice consistent progress in their practice.  When you can't make it to class try practicing some of the poses you are comfortable with at home.

Can I practice yoga at home?

Yes. Practicing at home, even if it is for 20 minutes, will help to maintain health, deepen your understanding of the poses and draw the mind more inwards. Try practicing some of the poses you learned in class or refer to the sequences in Yoga the Iyengar Way, Light on Yoga, Yoga a Gem for Women, or Yoga the Path to Holistic Health.
